HOODMAPS: THE COLLABORATIVE MAP
It all started with Pieter Levels, a Dutch digital nomad and the founder of Nomadlist, decided to launch Hoodmaps so he could get a sense of the places where he might settle down.
Building on the principle of collaborative mapping, Hoodmaps invites users to categorize neighborhoods in any city in the world based on the type of people likely to be found there.
The system features six categories, represented by six different colors: the “Rich,” “Tourist,” “Student,” “Normies” (symbolized by a house, presumably to denote family structures), “Suits” (referring to office workers), and Hipsters.
In addition, Hoodmaps allows users to tag neighborhoods—that is, to highlight specific features or attractions. As a result, in Paris, for example, the Sentier neighborhood has become “Startup Land,” while the areas around the Champs-Élysées and the Quai d’Orsay are labeled “Tourists everywhere ”… As for Batignolles, you’ll find charming “local boutiques and restaurants” and “stroller land,” reflecting the family-friendly atmosphere there.
